View from our 150 euro (ouch) hotel in Reggio di Calabria. The mountains across the strait are Sicily.
View from our hotel: Stromboli peak.
One of two churches on the island with the mountain in the background.
Took a boat ride on the second day to see the activity from the sea. Could see the explosions just fine, they were quite loud too.
Taking photos from the boat at night was really, really hard. This is one I got... note the little white dot on the left (that's a headlamp from where we'll be in a couple days).
From the boat, again.
Stromboli town (three little towns combined) as we ascended to the top. The little island is Strombolicchio, a volcanic neck.
Pyrotechnics from the edge of the active crater.
Wish people could have just sat down, turned off their headlamps and enjoy the show, but at least in this view you get a feel of where we were with respect to the craters.
The active vents: the extremely explosive vent is on the right, showered by incandescent blocks. The more active but less explosive vent is a glowing cloud on the left.
The most explosive vent! This explosion sent blocks above our heads.
Jellyfish sting! The day or so after. More on my back.
Life on Stromboli.
Stromboli a la notte.
